A weathering powder is a finely ground pigment used to create the appearance of grime, rust, dirt, soot and other undesirable but nonetheless omnipresent elements of human-affected landscapes. The targeted use of weathering powders on model railways can create an air of lived-in realism that is almost impossible to otherwise achieve.
Weathering powders can be applied as is (dry) or like paint (wet). They can be mixed together to create unique or hard-to-find colours, or they can be dissolved in a lacquer that is applied with a brush to create even more compelling effects. The key to success with weathering powders is to keep an open mind and experiment.
In most cases, model train builders only need modest amounts of weathering powder, since overuse of rust, soot or other effects can draw too much attention to themselves and away from other elements of the landscape.
